Trust Respect Unity Excellence #TRUE Literacy & Numeracy Literacy At St Peter’s, we understand successful and continued literacy development for all students relies on the highest quality of teaching practice in this area. Literacy learners are provided with a supportive learning environment, developmentally appropriate learning experiences and engage in a range of highly effective instructional strategies. Our teaching approach is based on understanding the development of literacy acquisition, including responsive literacy learning pathways. These are based on student needs, skills and strategies, catering for diversity in learning. St Peter’s Literacy teaching approach incorporates a broad range of teaching pedagogies, balancing the use of structured explicit strategies with student-centred, authentic learning experiences. All literacy teaching and learning includes modelled, shared, guided and independent learning activities. Numeracy St Peter’s strongly affirms that in all areas of schooling, students who self-discover connections in their learning make their learning more meaningful and retainable. In numeracy, we are transforming our lessons from “mimicking lessons” to “thinking lessons.” Staff are regularly trained by Numeracy Leaders and Catholic Education officers in current numeracy practices. At St Peter’s, we are implementing lessons that follow a “Launch, Explore, Summarise” approach. Teachers cleverly Launch a problem or scenario, students are given time to Explore and this is followed by a teacher-led Summary. These lessons are designed to encourage students to make the mathematical links prior to being explicitly shown by teachers. Again, we are aiming to provide “thinking lessons” in numeracy. In conjunction to this, we also see value in explicitly teaching mathematical skills and processes. St Peter’s is extremely well-resourced with an array of hands-on numeracy resources. These are kept in a central hub in the school and teachers are aware of the available resources. Classrooms are well-equipped with an array of hands-on numeracy materials. Students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 have regular access to Mathematics resources kept in their classrooms. Students in Junior Primary are provided with a “Take Home Maths Pack” with materials such as dice, playing cards and counters. With instruction and guidance from the classroom teacher, these packs promote mathematical fun and reinforcement in the home.

Pre Kindy Our Pre Kindy Program focuses on learning through imaginative, cognitive and sensory play, using the indoor and outdoor environment as the classroom. It is a time to explore, and each child is encouraged to make meaning of their world through hands-on experiences. Each child is supported in developing his/her own unique gifts through a child-focused curriculum that acknowledges the whole child and further develops his/her unique capabilities and a love of learning. Children develop their creativity, emotional well-being, sense of belonging and social skills. As we venture on walks through the school to visit the chickens, Prayer Garden, Library and open play spaces, we develop a sense of ‘belonging’ to a larger community. Our program is based on the Early Years Learning Framework and has “a specific emphasis on play-based learning and recognises the importance of communication and language and social and emotional development.” (The Early Years Learning Framework-Belonging, Being and Becoming p.5). We aim to provide a learning environment that caters for the development of each child across the spiritual, social, emotional, language, cognitive, creative and physical domains. The wellbeing of each child is of great importance and we have a wellness session after lunch (in lieu of rest time). Our staff create a caring, safe and stimulating environment that nurtures and encourages each child to investigate, inquire, wonder and engage in nature-based play. We believe that the home-school partnership with our families is very important and we look forward to working together, welcoming conversations and communication. Children can attend Pre Kindy once he/she has turned 3 years of age. Our Pre Kindy sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday in the school term, between 9am and 2.45pm (classroom doors open at 8.45am). Pre Kindy Information Pre Kindy Booklet St Peter’s welcomes children into our Early Childhood Centre, our focus is to develop the whole child by providing an environment in which children feel they belong through a safe, secure, nurturing and stimulating environment. The Early Years program nurtures the growth and development of each child spiritually, socially, emotionally, cognitively and morally. The program acknowledges the values and beliefs of our children and an awareness of their differences and diversities. We believe in the importance of ‘learning through play’, providing play based experiences that enhance and enrich decision making skills, self-esteem and self-confidence, a sense of responsibility, resilience, good citizenship and respect for others. Parents are the primary educators We acknowledge that parents are their child’s first educators; our role is to support parents on their child’s faith and educational journey through experiences that nurture and develop each child’s sense of wonder and awe of God in their life and the world around them. We foster a strong partnership between home, school, parish and community, this is the is the key to ensure positive and successful learning outcomes for our children . Together we support our children to be, become and belong. We invite parent involvement through class rosters, excursions/ incursions and special events. 1/1 O ur Program Our Early Years program has strong emphasis on high-quality Literacy and Numeracy practices. This is achieved through explicit teaching and the development of critical thinking strategies to support the progress of student’s achievements in these areas. To view the full Uniform Guidelines, please click below Uniforms are available for purchasing at: Uniform Concepts Inglewood Superstore, 834 Beaufort Street, Inglewood. https://www.nellgray.com.au/Schools/St-Peter-s-Primary The Superstore is open 6 days per week, (Monday to Friday – 9am-5pm, Thursday 9am-6pm and Saturday 9am-1pm). The Superstore is professionally fitted-out and managed by highly trained staff, air conditioned and provides greater facilities for customers, including full credit card and eftpos facilities. Uniform Concepts also offers online ordering with the option of collection at the store or delivery to home. Uniform Guidelines Uniform Price List and Order Form Second-hand Uniform Shop The Second-hand Uniform Shop is a voluntary service provided by our Parents and Friends Association. All funds raised from the sale of second-hand uniforms are directed to the school to assist with funding for various items and activities. All uniform donations can be handed in at the front office. Trust Respect Unity Excellence #TRUE Student Wellbeing School Social Worker Social Workers play an important role in supporting students' academic, social-emotional and behavioural needs. They work collaboratively with the School Leadership Team, staff, caregivers, external agencies and students to provide a comprehensive support system. Our Social Worker engages with the school community, in both direct and indirect ways, addressing individual, group and systemic needs. Melanie Rowe, our School Social Worker, is at the school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Given the large size of our school, the involvement of the School Social Worker is determined by the Student Support Team based on school priorities. If you believe your child would benefit from their support, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher, who will follow up accordingly. Speech and OT Services Hendercare Therapy Services HenderCare is a therapy services team offering Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy onsite at St Peter’s Primary School, on Thursdays and Fridays. HenderCare provides Speech and OT services to private paying families, as well as families accessing the NDIS, and we are looking forward to working collaboratively to support the students and families in our school.
